Mattel Introduces Autistic Barbie

Yesterday Mattel introduced the world to Autistic Barbie. Yes, you read that correctly; this new doll was designed in consultation with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) in the US and features elbow and wrist articulation for stimming, along with flat feet, a functional fidget spinner and an AAC device.

Autistic Barbie also doesn't make direct eye contact and wears sensory-friendly clothing, reflecting some of the challenges that those of us on the autism spectrum face.

I would like to congratulate Mattel in asisting different communities to feel represented in the toys they play with. I also hope this is just the beginning as there is so much potential to expand to help represent the diversity of the autism spectrum.

What do you think of this new Barbie?
